Land-based or cruise?

The biggest decision of a Galápagos trip. Answer six questions and get a clear answer, with the costs side by side.

  • $2,6848 days on land, mid-range, pp
  • $6,7718-day cruise, mid-range, pp
  • $750cruise per day, mid-range
  • 6questions to your answer

Short answer: choose a cruise if you want the remote islands (Genovesa, Fernandina, western Isabela, the albatross colony on Española) and you are fine on boats. Choose land-based if you want to spend less (about $2,684 vs $6,771 per person for 8 mid-range days), get seasick, travel with young kids, or want evenings in town.

The quiz

  1. 1. What is your budget per person for the islands (excluding your flight to Ecuador)?
  2. 2. How do you feel on boats?
  3. 3. What matters more?
  4. 4. Who is travelling?
  5. 5. How far ahead are you booking?
  6. 6. Do you want beach time, cafés and evenings in town?
Land-basedCruise
It's a close call: try a land-based trip with one or two boat day trips to the outer sites, or a short 4–5 day cruise.

Costs from the trip cost calculator: two adults, flights from Quito, park fee and transit card included; land-based = 3 islands and 4 tours (mid-range) or 2 islands and 3 tours (budget). Cruise per-day prices are agency examples, see sources.

The middle way

Many people do 4–5 days on land plus one or two boat day trips to the famous outer sites near Santa Cruz (Bartolomé's Pinnacle Rock, North Seymour's boobies). Or book a short 4–5 day cruise and add a few days in Puerto Ayora.
